The ancient road of transhumance in Molise

The journey "The ancient road of transhumance" goes back almost over the entire trail of the Regio Tratturo Ateleta-Biferno. Starting from the Biferno river valley, we cross hilly landscapes up to the Trigno river valley. Afterwards, we climb on the sub-Apennine chains of Frentani Mountains and Mountains of Alto Molise. The journey is characterized by luxuriant rural hilly and silvo-pastoral mountain environments, by the architecture of transhumant pastoral culture, by the beauty of some small villages and coenobies in the open countryside, by the excellent culinary tradition of Molise, as well as by uniqueness of the Croatian-Molise community.

Walking from Larino to Pescopennataro to rediscover Regio Tratturo Ateleta-Biferno and hills and mountains around.

Historical and cultural itinerary

The ancient way of horizontal transhumance: Regio Tratturo Ateleta-Biferno, a historical and cultural asset that connects the Biferno river valley with the pasturage of Monti Pizzi and Majella mountains, shows architectural, religious and cultural statements of the of the itinerant pastoral culture, including towers, churches, abbeys, Roman rustic villas and straight castles.

Sites of Community Importance

Regio tratturo Ateleta-Biferno runs along or crosses many Sites of Community Importance (S.I.C.) of Natura 2000 network, natural areas of high value, for the protection and conservation of habitats and of animal and plant species.

Hilly and mountain environments

The trip allows you to know the hilly areas of the low valleys of the rivers Biferno and Trigno, both characterized by a marked rurality. Minority language communities

There are three villages repopulated by Slavs since the beginning of 1500 located along the ancient traditional road: Acquaviva Collecroce, San Felice del Molise and Montemitro. We can admire the first two roads from afar, while we will take a break on the third one to find out the cultural richness of our land and the unique peculiarities that only in Molise can be admired.

Delicious food and excellent drinks

The journey is enriched by the excellent traditional cuisine of Molise and its excellent drinks. Typical products and traditional dishes, often handmade and old-fashioned, cheer up the evenings of walkers. You can taste cheeses such as caciocavallo, pecorino, burrata, manteca and others; cured meats like soppressata, ventricina, capicollo, rolled up ventresca, etc.; white and black truffles. You can drink Moscato white wine and Tintilia red wine.
